Privacy Policy

1. Who we are

eRyde is a transport marketplace operating in South Africa. This policy explains how we process your personal information in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 ("POPIA"). Contact our information officer at admin.eryde@gmail.com.

eRyde is a technology platform only. We introduce customers to independent transport providers and handle booking and payment. We do not own, operate, control, supervise, inspect, drive, insure or employ any vehicle, driver, provider or helper listed on the platform.

Every service is supplied under a contract between the customer and the provider. eRyde is not a party to that contract, is not a transport operator, carrier, freight forwarder, driving service or insurer, and is not liable or legally responsible for any incident, accident, injury, death, loss, theft, damage, delay, dispute or unlawful conduct that occurs before, during or after any service booked through the platform.

To the fullest extent permitted by South African law, all such risk and responsibility rests with the provider and the customer. Nothing in this document excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, including under the Consumer Protection Act, 68 of 2008.

2. Information we collect

  • Account details: name, email, phone, profile photo.
  • Identity verification: ID document, driver's licence, selfie, and (for providers) vehicle documents and photos.
  • Booking data: pickup and drop-off locations, times, seat count and price.
  • Payment metadata processed through YOCO. We do not store card numbers.
  • Device and log data: IP address, browser and usage events required to operate the service.

3. How we use your information

  • Create and manage your account and verify your identity.
  • Match customers with providers and fulfil bookings.
  • Process payments, commissions, refunds and payouts.
  • Detect fraud, enforce our terms and comply with the law.
  • Contact you about your bookings, account and material policy changes.

4. Legal basis (POPIA)

We rely on your consent (for identity documents and marketing), performance of a contract (bookings), our legitimate interests (fraud prevention, service improvement) and compliance with law.

5. Sharing

  • With the counterparty to a booking (customer and provider) so the trip can happen.
  • With YOCO as our payment processor.
  • With infrastructure providers under confidentiality obligations.
  • With law enforcement when compelled by valid legal process.

6. Retention

Account and booking records are kept for at least 5 years after last activity for tax and dispute-resolution obligations. Verification documents are retained while your account is active and deleted within 30 days after account closure, unless we must keep them longer.

6b. Deactivation and deletion of your account

  • Temporary deactivation. Your data is retained unchanged and processing is limited to keeping your account available. You cannot request or provide services while deactivated, and you may reactivate at any time. Any paid subscription must be cancelled by you beforehand.
  • Deletion. On request your account is scheduled for deletion, you are signed out and service access ends. Signing in within 30 days reactivates the account and cancels the deletion.
  • Permanent erasure. 30 days after the request, an automated daily job irreversibly erases your profile, verification documents (ID, licence, selfie), avatar, vehicles, listings, bookings and reviews, and your login credentials.
  • Legal exceptions. We may retain minimal transaction, tax, accounting and fraud-prevention records where POPIA section 14 and South African tax law require it. These are kept in restricted-access storage and used for no other purpose.
  • Any active paid subscription must be cancelled by you before deactivation or deletion; no refund is issued for the remainder of a paid period.

6c. Verifying your email address and mobile number

We verify your email address by emailed confirmation link and your mobile number by SMS one-time PIN. This is necessary to protect your account, prevent impersonation and contact you about trips. You may change either at any time in Account settings; the new address or number must be re-verified before you can request or provide services. Verified status is recorded and controlled by our authentication system, not by you.

7. Security

Data is transmitted over TLS and stored in access-controlled databases. Verification documents live in a private bucket accessible only via short-lived signed URLs. Access is limited to authorised staff.

8. Your rights

Under POPIA you may request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal information, object to processing, withdraw consent, and lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator (inforegulator.org.za). To exercise these rights email admin.eryde@gmail.com.

9. Cookies

We use essential cookies and local storage to keep you signed in and to remember preferences. We do not use third-party advertising cookies.

10. Cross-border transfers

Some processors may host data outside South Africa. Where they do, we require equivalent protection through contract or their own certifications.

11. Changes

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be communicated in-app or by email at least 14 days before they take effect.
